Exam & Cleaning
Routine exams and cleanings — the foundation of lifelong oral health.
Regular dental visits aren’t just about keeping your smile bright. They’re about catching problems early, before they require more invasive (and expensive) treatment.
What to Expect During Your Visit
A complete exam and cleaning visit covers three areas — each performed thoughtfully, without rushing.
Comprehensive Oral Exam
Your doctor personally performs a thorough evaluation of your teeth, gums, bite, and soft tissues — checking for:
· Cavities and early decay
· Gum disease and recession
· Signs of teeth grinding or clenching
· Oral cancer screening
· Bite and jaw alignment issues
· Existing fillings or crowns that may need attention
Catching problems early means simpler, less expensive treatment.
Digital X-rays (As Needed)
Low-dose digital radiographs help us detect problems invisible to the naked eye — including:
· Decay between teeth
· Bone loss around tooth roots
· Infections deep inside teeth
· Impacted wisdom teeth
· Cysts or other abnormalities
We use the lowest dose necessary and only when clinically indicated. For routine cases, bitewing X-rays once a year are typical.
Professional Cleaning
Our hygienists remove plaque and tartar buildup that daily brushing and flossing can’t reach — preventing gum disease and keeping your teeth looking their best.
We polish each tooth, clean between them, and provide gentle education on home care techniques tailored to your specific needs. Most patients leave feeling noticeably cleaner and refreshed.
What Sets 365 E-LOOK Apart
Routine cleanings are simple in name only — the difference is in how they’re done.
Same Doctor, Every Visit
At larger clinics, you might see a different doctor or hygienist at every visit. At 365 E-LOOK, you’ll see the same doctor each time — someone who remembers your history, knows your concerns, and tracks subtle changes over time.
This continuity matters. Catching a small change early — a new sensitive spot, a slowly developing cavity — is far easier when someone has been watching your mouth for years.
Time, Not Rushed
Many clinics schedule cleanings as 20-minute slots and rush through them. We take longer — typically 45 minutes to an hour — to do them properly.
That extra time means more thorough cleaning between teeth, careful inspection of every surface, time to answer your questions, and personalized advice on what you can do better at home. The result lasts longer between visits.
Honest Recommendations
If something needs treatment, we’ll tell you clearly. If it doesn’t, we’ll tell you that too.
We don’t recommend procedures you don’t need, and we don’t push expensive whitening or cosmetic add-ons during cleaning visits. Our goal is your long-term oral health, not maximizing today’s bill.
What to Expect at Your Visit
A typical exam and cleaning visit takes about 45 to 60 minutes. Here’s how it flows.
Step 1 — Comprehensive Exam
Your visit begins with a thorough oral examination. Your doctor checks each tooth, evaluates gum health using periodontal measurements, screens for oral cancer, and examines your bite and jaw function.
For new patients or when clinically indicated, we take low-dose digital X-rays. We’ll show you anything we find on a screen and explain in plain language — no pressure, no jargon.
Duration: about 15 to 20 minutes.
Step 2 — Professional Cleaning
Before the cleaning begins, we apply a topical anesthetic rinse to numb the gum tissue — making the entire process more comfortable, especially around sensitive areas. No injections are needed for routine cleanings.
Our hygienist then performs a thorough cleaning — removing plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline, polishing each tooth surface, and flossing between every contact.
If we found early signs of gum disease, we may apply a fluoride treatment or recommend a more involved deep cleaning at a follow-up visit.
Duration: about 30 to 40 minutes.
Step 3 — Personalized Care Plan
Before you leave, we discuss what we found, address any concerns, and plan your next visit. If any treatment is needed, we explain it clearly with cost estimates — but only if it’s truly necessary.
We also provide tailored home care advice — specific techniques, tools, or products that fit your particular situation, whether that’s better flossing technique, an electric brush recommendation, or strategies for managing dry mouth.
Duration: about 5 to 10 minutes.
Common Questions About Exam & Cleaning
How often should I come in?
Most patients do well with a cleaning and exam every six months.
Patients with gum disease, diabetes, heart conditions, pregnancy, or certain other risk factors may benefit from more frequent visits (every 3 to 4 months) — and these enhanced cleanings are often covered by insurance.
Your doctor will recommend a schedule that’s right for your specific situation.
Are X-rays really necessary at every visit?
Not at every visit, no.
For most adults with stable oral health, bitewing X-rays once a year are sufficient. For new patients or those with a history of cavities, we may take a more complete set initially. Children and teens may need slightly more frequent imaging to monitor developing teeth.
We use low-dose digital radiography, which exposes you to significantly less radiation than older film X-rays — comparable to a few hours of natural background radiation.
What does TRICARE cover for routine care?
The TRICARE Dental Program (TDP) covers routine preventive care very well. Eligible dependents typically receive:
· Two periodic oral exams per year (100% covered)
· Two professional cleanings per year (100% covered)
· Bitewing X-rays as clinically appropriate (100% covered)
· Two fluoride applications per year for both children and adults (100% covered)
These preventive services are covered at the same level regardless of Command-Sponsored or Non-Command-Sponsored enrollment status.
We verify your coverage before your visit and file the claim on your behalf — no upfront paperwork required.
Are additional cleanings covered for pregnancy or medical conditions?
Yes — the TRICARE Dental Program includes enhanced benefits for certain situations:
· Pregnancy: One additional prophylaxis per pregnancy (covered)
· Diabetes (Type 1 or 2): An additional cleaning per year may be covered, recognizing the increased risk of gum disease
· Heart disease, organ transplant, certain immune conditions: Enhanced cleaning frequency may apply
These benefits aren’t always automatic — we’ll help you confirm your eligibility and submit the appropriate documentation. Just let us know about your medical conditions or pregnancy during your visit so we can plan accordingly.
What if I haven't been to the dentist in years?
Don’t worry — and don’t feel embarrassed. We see this regularly, and our approach is non-judgmental.
Your first visit will involve a more thorough exam and possibly a longer cleaning, depending on what we find. If gum disease or cavities have developed, we’ll explain what’s going on and outline a treatment plan in plain terms.
Coming back to the dentist is a step worth celebrating. We make it as easy as possible.
Time for Your Next Cleaning?
Whether it’s been six months or six years, we’re glad to see you. Routine care is the easiest way to keep your teeth healthy for life — and the most cost-effective.
For TRICARE Dental Program patients, exams and cleanings are typically fully covered. We verify your benefits before your visit and handle the claim on your behalf — no upfront paperwork required.
